Doug’s career began with a passion for diving, which took him to science, marine biology, expeditions, photography and finally the Antarctic, where a chance meeting with David Attenborough opened his eyes to wildlife film making, particularly in the poles.

“There are big days when animals behave spectacularly right in front of your lens. And other quieter times when a deeper understanding reveals itself, a new awareness of the environment and what lives there. I’ll be talking about my most memorable encounters.”

Doug has filmed for series like Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Human Planet and Frozen Planet, presented a series on whales, written books, appeared in a feature film, and given hundreds of presentations about our changing planet and how best to deal with the challenges it’s facing.

Doug will have prints for sale on the night, with 10% of sales going to Valley Arts.

Doug’s photographic awards include eight Emmy’s and five BAFTA’s. He has twice won the underwater category in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year and has four Honorary Doctorates in recognition of his camerawork, as well as two Polar Medals. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. In 2018 he was awarded the RSGS Mungo Park Medal.
